synopsis The time, the early 1960's, the place, Jackson, Mississippi. Eugenia Phalen - Skeeter to her friends and family - has just graduated from Ole Miss and has returned home in part to take care of her seriously ill mother. Unlike her female friends and colleagues who used their Ole Miss time solely to find a husband, Skeeter, who has never dated or had a boyfriend despite wanting romance in her life, strives primarily for a career, either as a serious journalist or editorialist. In Skeeter's social circle, the family servants, called "the help", are exclusively black. The female servants do the cooking and cleaning, but their primary responsibility is child rearing. The servants get passed down within families from generation to generation, so the child that they raised ultimately becomes the boss. Fifty year old Aibileen Clark is one such servant, who works for Skeeter's easily influenced friend, Elizabeth Leefolt. Skeeter asks Aibileen to help her with her newly acquired job, answering a housekeeping advice column. However, incidents that happen around Skeeter, including her mother seemingly being less than forthright about what happened to their own now absent female servant, the elderly Constantine Jefferson, who raised Skeeter and who Skeeter loved like a mother, make Skeeter come to the decision to write about the experiences of the black female servants in relation to their white bosses. Elaine Stein, a senior editor with Harper & Row in New York, approves the concept, but she knows that Skeeter getting the servants to talk, which Skeeter ultimately discovers is against the law in Mississippi, will be difficult if not impossible. Aibileen, the first and only servant who Skeeter asks, initially refuses Skeeter's request. But incidents around Aibileen ultimately get her and her acerbic-tongued best friend, Minny Jackson, who has long worked for the Walters family and now works for the Walters' racist daughter Hilly Holbrook, to talk to Skeeter on the sly about their experiences. One of those incidents involves Hilly's "Home Help Sanitation Initiative", which would ban any black servant from using their white employer's washroom. Minny's experiences also include those with Celia Foote, a young uncultured woman new to the area who has never had servants, who is now married to Hilly's old boyfriend Johnny Foote, and who is shunned by Hilly and her social circle for supposedly cheating with Johnny while he and she were still dating. Even if Harper & Row or any other firm publishes the book, Skeeter and by association any servant who helped her may have a continued rough road ahead in overcoming the resulting wrath, especially by Hilly and her type

Crafted with care, told with composure & powered by strong feminine energy, The Help is a wicked combination of comedy & drama that manages to touch on serious issues without ever discarding its funny side. Entertaining & enlightening in equal doses, this period drama is a roller-coaster ride of emotions that delivers a powerful jolt while also boasting moments of genuine laughter.
Set during the 1960s, the story of The Help follows a young woman who aspires to be a successful writer and, after witnessing the poor treatment of African-American maids from their employers on a daily basis, decides to reveal their side of the story by writing a book detailing their experiences. Assisting to bring her noble work to life are two maids who work for her white socialite friends.
Written & directed by Tate Taylor, the film packs a few dense moments in between but maintains a lighthearted tone for the majority of its runtime. Taylor could have gone for a serious, hard-hitting drama about the racial injustice & hardships these housemaids go through on a daily basis but the witty dimension gives this tale an accessible layer that gets the job done without trying too hard.
Production design team does a fab job at recreating the required 1960s setting, Cinematography is expertly carried out, for the images brim with warm palette & bright lighting while fluid movements of the camera keep the drama sharp & resonant. Its 146 minutes runtime is never felt, thanks to its steady pacing & first-rate editing. And Thomas Newman's score is able to evoke the apt emotions with its serene tracks.
Coming to the performances, The Help features a powerful ensemble in Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Allison Janney & Sissy Spacek, and all of them get their moment to shine. Davis delivers the most powerful performance of them all, and is closely followed by Spencer. Stone is absolutely adorable, Dallas Howard does well with what she is given, while Chastain pretty much steals the show & is my absolute favourite here.
On an overall scale, The Help is a skilfully directed, deftly written, brightly photographed, smartly edited, calmly composed & ingeniously performed cinema that could've done a tad more with its provocative themes but in the end, it still succeeds as a rich example of its genre that's enjoyable, amusing & illuminating. Sophisticated in all filmmaking departments, strengthened by a casting powerhouse & keeping a firm grip on the viewers' senses, The Help is one of the best films of its year that's worth your time & money.

To me, The Help is an in-depth extension of the older movie, The Long Walk Home, with Whoopi Goldberg and Sissy Spacek. I think that's why Sissy was included in the cast of The Help. I loved both movies, however, the reason I gave The Help only 9 stars instead of 10 is because I did not find the little white 2-year old baby (the last one that Abilene raised) logical and believable. In other words she was too young to be saying and understanding words like, You're my real mama, Abby. Please don't go. Are you going to go take care of another little white girl? Those lines are meant for a child at least 5 years old. That is the only character in the movie where I feel the writer screwed up.
